Country House
Nothing says country living like the family hearth in rustic stone. This 565 SF addition to a Connecticut country farmhouse is composed of a 20-foot-tall cathedral ceiling great room anchored by a hand-crafted field stone fireplace at the far end. Glass windows on three side fill the room with light and establish a close indoor-outdoor relationship. The field stone, with its exquisite custom irregular two-to-four-inch stones pavers, is also used in the new terrace which is a delightful outdoor entertaining, dinning, or reading space. The stone fireplace is double sided to bring the fire’s warmth to both the interior of the great room and outdoor terrace. The screened in porch was enlarged to 420 SF, and a 2480 SF interior redesign of the foyer, living room, kitchen, and laundry room were also accomplished with custom built in millwork, new finishes and designer furniture. Respect for the local architectural tradition was observed in the cross braced rafter beams of the great room, typical in the Connecticut country architectural vocabulary. High gloss white oak hardwood floors, cedar shingles, and shiplap wood siding make this house an unmistakably charming local New England home, while simple interior moldings, bright furniture and a modern paint palette, advance it as refined twenty first century building.
